Mark Newgent, Army Captain/Parent
In these uncertain and confusing times, we need dedicated, experienced, proven leaders with common sense on our School Board that will place our kids first.
My background is 20 years US Army Captain, Commander, Anti-Terrorism Officer and Security Advisor/Planner for the Pacific Region. Most importantly, I am a father of two children that attend Irvine schools.
Upon election my goal is to preserve/enhance school safety and ensure a better curriculum. I will work to ensure students are protected by the finest police/firefighting forces and support policies that promote:
- Upgrade school safety plans
- Safety/security training for teachers
- Fiscal responsibility and lower taxes
- Replace integrated science and common core curriculums
- Reduce School Overcrowding
- Recruit and retain quality teachers
- Open and honest communication
- Avoid centralization of power/keep decision making local
When I was 21 years old, I threw a rifle over my shoulder and boarded a plane to go to combat in a place I never heard of, for people I didn’t even know... Just imagine how I hard will work for my own children, my friends and my community.
I served our country for over 20 years; let me serve our schools for the next 4.

On the anniversary of D day 75 years later I reflect on my Military experience and how much D day influenced me and my family. I am thankful our service members faced hardship with strength and resolve to win. The 82nd Airborne Infantry was my first Assignment in the Army. There I received a first class education on WW2 as the 82nd Airborne conducted combat jumps and played a key role in the invasion on 6 June 1944. Reminders of the 82nd Airborne’s involvement in WW2 are everywhere around the division area on FT. Bragg, NC. From the names of our streets (like Ardennes, Bastogne and Anzio), Airborne monuments, our Airborne museum even our main drop zone is named “Sicily Drop Zone” (that I was MEDEVAC’d from twice) to remind us of our lineage as paratroopers. Our 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment motto was “Strike Hold”. It came from WW2 in reference to striking the enemy fast, holding our positions and never giving up one inch of ground. I was lucky enough during my time in division to spend time around WW2 Veterans during the 82nd Airborne’s annual “All American week” and hear their experiences. Eventually I was stationed in Germany, learned how to speak German, met holocaust survivors and went to Normandie to see it with my own eyes. After all this time we need to always remember the sacrifices of the greatest generation and how our freedom is the most expensive thing we have even if we aren’t the ones who paid for it. #marknewgent #irvine #election Sunday, September 9, 2018 11:28 PM Protecting Schools in Combat
The US Army prepared me for everything, except seeing children on the battlefield. I saw first-hand how people suffer when governments breakdown… This photo is from the first time I went to a combat zone when we protected many things... most importantly we protected the kids at this school. The kids in the photo are happy because they knew as long as we were there they were going to live. The Irvine City Council discusses plans for the proposed Veteran's Cemetery Sunday, May 27, 2018 8:17 PM Northwood Gratitude and Honor Memorial
Remembering our fallen today. I found name on the wall of someone I served with. SPC Kephart and his squad were ambushed on their 10th day in Iraq. Under heavy enemy fire and roadside bombs Kephart fired his .50 cal machine gun until a round exploded and jammed the weapon. He then grabbed his team leader’s m249 SAW and kept firing to suppress the enemy for some time until he was wounded by an RPG. The medics kept him alive until he was MEDEVAC’d but later died of his wounds. According to witnesses his heroic actions saved many other lives that day. I tried to locate his dog tag but he did not have one on the display. I talked to the people in charge of the memorial/display. They assured me SPC Jonathan Kephart will get a dog tag for their display. RIP SPC Kephart! Mark Newgent Wednesday, January 24, 2018 11:45 AM Thanking Congressman Lou Correa for supporting our Soldiers
